The settlers first called this community Randolph Center, but it was changed to Friesland in when the railroad and post office came to the village. The change was precipitated due to the the village of Randolph being just seven miles down the road. Friesland was chosen as the village name because of the many Dutch settlers, some of whom came from the province of Friesland in the Netherlands.
