Kingscliff is home to the annual Australian Longboard Surfing Open, attracting wave riders and their entourages for one of the biggest World Surf League longboard events in Australia. If you feel inspired by the professionals, and are keen to try a board with a little assistance, this is the place to do it. Or sign up with Watersports Guru , which also takes visitors out to explore the region in kayaks, on stand-up paddleboards or with a mask and flippers attached on snorkelling tours to the easily accessible Cook Island Aquatic Reserve.
If you have children in tow, Guru hosts a program designed especially for kids looking to become more confident in the water. Back on dry land, you can hire bicycles including beach cruisers from Kingscliff Cycle Centre.
From here, head along the bike path north to Fingal or south to Casuarina, Cabarita, Hastings Point and Pottsville , on the lookout for dolphins and whales the whole way. The locals say that the sunset views from the bridge are pretty stunning. Apart from the cafes and restaurants on the main street which offer Thai, Mexican, Spanish, Italian, Indian, Nepalese and Tibetan and Australian cuisines, there is the surf club and bowls club, both right on the beachfront which offer tasty pub-style meals and trivia nights. The Sunday morning Champagne breakfast buffet at the Bowls Club is a very popular event.
