Bump in the night? Why would you need to use more than rounds? Just throw a few extra magazines in a pack and call it good. Unless you are preparing for SHTF, then you might wanna double that Quoted: You're not being serious are you?
Quoted: Quoted: Quoted: As many as you can comfortably carry and as you have space for and as your mission needs. Tip: The more accurate you are with your weapon system, the less ammo you need to carry. Everyone has already pointed out good advice. Quoted: Tip: The more accurate you are with your weapon system, the less ammo you need to carry. I am not going to invade a country.
If I need more than that chances are I am F'd. Quoted: In theory There is a point where spray and pray or suppressive fire comes in handy. Quoted: Quoted: Tip: The more accurate you are with your weapon system, the less ammo you need to carry. I have 3 on a mini mav with a blowout kit that I put over my PC. Provisions to put 2 in the kangaroo pouch if iI deem so. One more on the belt with a pistol mag and a flash light.
Plus the ones in the rifle and pistol. The rest are in the pack. That's it. Of course I'm serious. Is 20 mags too much? Well, only if 20 mags slow you down. How about 10? Again, if 10 mags slow you down, it's too many. If you are triple stacked but it prevents you from turning your torso. Thus the statement in red can be questioned. But apparently this thread isn't serious, so good luck on your decision.
In short, on your person in a reachable area. You said it is "shtf" rig so I say load it up, ounces equal pounds and pounds equal pain. Personally I go heavy with ammo and feel I'd rather have it then wish I did. However, it depends on your skill set, physical fitness level and training. As for the fixed blade knife you posted on your pc I say keep it but put it on your belt and see if it works for you there, that's what I do.
Train with it there for a few weeks and see if that will work out if not the beauty of it is you can put it back on your pc. I love fixed blade knives, they never need reloading. Their gear got caught on the tangled mess of what was left of their gun truck after it was hit by an IED.
One bled out and one burned to death. I can't explicitly state that it was their mags that got them killed, but it is a very real possibility. Keep your primary mission in mind. If you're going to be rolling in a truck, it's likely wise to stage more ammo in the truck and run with less on your body if it snags on things.
Less is sometimes more. I was doing PSD stuff, and I only had five rifle mags on my plate carrier and one on my belt. Honestly, two of those were just so various SNCOs wouldn't get yell-y at me for not having a "full combat load. I was issued 4 Brownells aluminum mags and bought a pmag.
Carried the four Brownells on my kit and the p mag in my gun. Also had a 20 round sig mag in the gun and two 15 round magazines. Quoted: The idea that one magazine will get you killed is ridiculous. Its a pound. For most situations it probably is. I can tell you that often times 7 is not enough. You don't have to go far on this forum to find guys that have run out of ammo in a fight and its not a fun feeling.
The bottom line is not mobility vs firepower its capability vs necessity. Find me someone who died because he had too much ammo and Ill bake my own humble pie. Quoted: Of course I'm serious. Quoted: How many should you carry Company wanted us to carry 12 AR mags on us!! View Quote How many should you carry View Quote this thread could be better What do you do for a living?
Salient points, but Filled only some of them to see what the difference is with less? Also, I note from the other thread that you don't have plates yet. Those are really going to impact movement and positional shooting, too, and are going to be the basic platform on which you build the rest, and on what you figure out how much you can trade off movement and comfort for more mags or equipment carried.
Extra mags are all well and good, but not if you can't function in the first place. Also, do look into a good belt. Shifting some of the load of magazines from your back and shoulders to your much stronger hips is not a bad thing, if you do wish to carry a few extra, with the added benefit that a belt is much faster to throw on than a PC, so you're more likely to have it on you for more of the time, and you can have your secondary weapon your pistol on it as well Scalability is a good thing.
View Quote Having a lot of ammo is good when you're part of a team that also has a lot of ammo. I run a IFAK, 2 rifle mags, 1 pistol mag and one tourniquet. If i need more im doing something wrong. Having a lot of ammo is good when you're part of a team that also has a lot of ammo. I agree with all that you said, but I just wanted to add that some people do train with groups. They have "bug out groups". In fact if you really think you need body armor, rifles and mags for whatever scenario you are training for, then it probably would be a good idea to practice these types of maneuvers.
Honestly it does not matter who you are if you are against a competent enemy you don't have very good odds of survival if you are by yourself. That sized blade is better kept on a pack. Get a nice folding blade for your pocket. That all being said though 3 double stack AR pouches on top of plates blows if you ever have to go prone. I carried 10 mags very briefly in OIF and found out that I didn't need more than a few on me kept many more in the truck.
If you are just wanting a rig for class, HD, and prep then you should be fine with 3 mags and 1 in the gun. I am very comfortable with my costa leg rig 2 AR or what ever mags and 3 pistol or whatever mags.
But hey live and learn that ounces make pounds and pounds suck to carry View Quote I don't think this is true. I don't think this is true. You're not being serious are you? However, you should always have at least one spare magazine in a mag holster or pouch with you whenever you carry. Another reason you might need to up the count of magazines you carry is due to restrictive legislation in your state.
Similarly, the Virginia governor has vowed to pass similar legislation which may require me to adjust the number of magazines I carry. But what about other activities? If you practice any drill that requires a reload, you need a minimum of two magazines.
However, it is a more effective use of time to load magazines in bulk while on the shooting lanes. Therefore, I recommend between 3 and 4 extra magazines. Well I am glad you asked. Generally, your carry magazines will be loaded with hollow point or other round variant. These types of ammunition are usually forbidden at the shooting range.
Having your carry magazines double as range mags may result in the magazine spring wearing out prematurely.
Either you will need to replace the spring, or replace the magazine. Eventually manufacturers will cease production of your firearm because of a new model or revolutionary new design. How many magazines you carry on the regular is a personal choice. I realize there is a line between prepared and paranoid. But as they say, just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get ya. LoneArcher , Trevor98 , psuminer and 5 others like this. Since multiple attacker scenarios do occur, I wouldn't feel comfortable with 5 rounds and no reload.
A spare magazine is like a spare tire. It's the most likely point of failure that can be fixed quickly enough in the field.
And, sometimes, infrequent things do happen. Cobra 6 Actual , Gray29 and twin63 like this. Magazine failures are infrequent but should be expected. For my G29 I carry a spare in a mag pouch I made from an old wallet, 3 spare G29 mags in my bag, and 3 G20 mags in my truck. When I carry a full sized semi auto it's 2 spare mags on the opposite side and a few spares in the truck. By far the most comfortable and easiest way for me to carry. Double stacks in the pocket are extremely uncomfortable but single stack are perfect for the pocket.
I've been strongly considering a snag mag. You must log in or sign up to post here. Show Ignored Content.
