The play opens with the three witches talking in a deserted place. They talk of meeting again when they greet Macbeth, and the scene ends with these lines:. The line "fair is foul and foul is fair" means that all is not what it seems. She is the one who comes up with the plan to kill King Duncan and she also coerces her husband to execute it.
In a twist of events, Lady Macbeth does not cherish her new status as queen. She is haunted by the guilt of her evil deeds. It becomes evident that she has lost her mind when she starts sleepwalking and confessing about her role in the deaths of King Duncan and Banquo.
She rubs her hands as a gesture of washing them. This represents guilt and she is trying to take away that guilt by washing away the blood that has stained her hands. She eventually commits suicide to set herself free from the guilt. King Duncan is moved by the beauty and pleasant atmosphere of the castle.
After he is murdered in it however, it becomes obvious that the castle is far from what it is made out to be by the owners.
The porter unknowingly describes the evil that lurks in the castle. There is also the honorable title of the Thane of Cawdor. It is not a coincidence that the only two characters with the title try to harm the king. But, this is contrary to what is experienced in the play, as the two Cawdors commit acts of treason.
Unbeknownst to them, the chamberlains are framed for the murder of King Duncan and unfortunately killed for a crime they did not commit by Macbeth. Also, when Malcolm and Donalbain discover that their father, the king has been murdered, they realize they will be the next victims.
The play focuses on Macbeth, a tragic hero of noble descent whose gradual descent and downfall is the result of the supernatural.
I shall assess this later in the play. By beginning the play with this scene Shakespeare indicates the importance of the witches in the play and of the supernatural evil that they represent. Shakespeare opens the play with a dark and mysterious atmosphere, setting the mood of the play using a thunderstorm, an example of pathetic fallacy, a device used effectively throughout the play. This opening suggests that a battle is going on between good and evil; the witches reinforce this suggestion: 'When the battle's lost and won'. This play immediately gives the impression of deceit and evil scheming because as the witches riddle relates 'Fair is foul, and foul is fair'. This is the play's main theme - appearances can be deceptive.
They witches have tricked Macbeth. This only serves to command the witches to show him. Witches are brought forward in the opening scene, where they are speaking of their mysterious deeds. It is storming out, and they are planning to meet Macbeth after the storm is over.
Macbeth only sees the good in the situation.
